Mervin Eugene Cornell, Captain of Co.E. and then lists the name of his colonel Van Buren. In October of 1861 Mervin enlisted as a Captain and was later commissioned into Co. D of the 102nd New York Infantry. The unit soon participated in several battles and Cornell would receive high praise for his coolness under fire and his leadership skills during battle. Those skills would cost him his life when at Antietam a rebel bullet crashed into his skull killing him instantly somewhere in the area of the cornfield. Colonel James Lang mentions his death in the official after battle report. "While the line was forming, under fire of sharpshooters of the enemy, Capt. M. Eugene Cornell, of Co. D of this regiment, fell, dead, at the front of his command while bringing them into line, shot through the head". Another report states, "that while leading his men forward during the Battle of Antietam he reached to within 200 feet of the Confederate lines before he was instantly killed by a bullet which crashed thru his skull. He was in the midst of rallying his men as he saw them starting to falter before the onslaught of Confederate fire. It was reported that he was out in front waving his sword and urging his men forward and dressed in a splendid officers uniform made for a obvious target for Confederate troops which found their mark". In a letter written in great detail by Charles Smith of the 102nd discussing the regiments actions during the battle and Cornell's death stating that "a braver man never carried a sword".
