US Congressman. He studied both law and medicine and moved to Bayou Lafourche. Taylor opted for a career in law, became an attorney in Donaldsonville, and later moved to New Orleans. He held several local offices and in 1849 was appointed a member of the committee that revised Louisiana's Civil Code, Code of Procedure, and State Statutes. In 1854 Taylor was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat. He was reelected twice and served from 1855 until his 1861 withdrawal in support of the Confederacy. Taylor then returned to Louisiana, where he continued to practice law and ran the family plantation.
