Alice Pope Pickett Adams died Monday morning December 28, 2015 at her home in Westlake, Louisiana. She was 103 years old. Pope was born in Grand Bayou, Louisiana on December 13, 1912, to Milton Pope Pickett and Alice England Pickett, the oldest of six children. She attended school in Grand Bayou until her final year. She then graduated from Brenham High School in Brenham, TX. in 1931. She enrolled at Louisiana State Normal School (now Northwestern State University) and graduated in 1933 with a two year degree in education. While attending college she met Edward Adams. They married in June, 1934. They were married 46 years until his death July 17, 1980. They had three daughters, Alice, Mary Edna, and Bertha. They lived in Natchitoches until 1938 when they moved to Lake Charles, LA. They later moved to Westlake where Pope taught first grade for 30 years. In 1967 she enrolled at McNeese State University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in elementary education. She retired in 1975 but continued to substitute teach until she was in her 80's. Her love of teaching children extended to her church, Westlake United Methodist, where she taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Superintendent. She was beloved by her many students and many of them came to help her celebrate her 100th birthday in 2012.
Pope loved to work in the yard, growing flowers and vegetables. She also loved to travel. She loved her church and served in many ways. She was the lay delegate to Annual Conference for many years. Her greatest joy, however, was in working with children. She loved children and they in turn loved her. Her faith in God was unwavering and she sought to serve Him throughout her life. She left a legacy of love to her family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters and two sons-in-law, Fred and Alice Adams Fanta and Bertha Adams Giffin of Westlake, LA and Marvin Brossette of Shreveport, LA. Through marriage she gained additional great-grand-children, Jennifer Barnhill Martinez (and her children Kylie and Joseph), Daniel Barnhill (and his children, Thomas, Oliver and Lily), Rachel and Holly Odom, Andrew and Christopher Primeaux , Elizabeth, Maddox, and Ann Marie Lemons. She enjoyed her great-great-grandchildren and looked forward to visits from Cade and Jace Littleton, Jarith Hicks, Sawyer Graden, McKenna Barnhill, Clayton Fanta, Lexi and Carter Warden, and Addie Plaisance.
