ABERNATHY, Gregory Gayle Jr., 85, of the 3700 block of Farnsworth Dr., passed away on Sunday, July 27, 2014 in a local hospital. He was born on June 27, 1929 in Hopewell, Va., to the late Gregory and Gertrude Abernathy Sr. and was a proud U.S. Army Veteran. After retiring from Eastern Oil Co., he became a courier for Heritage Bank. He is survived by his loving wife, Deanna; son, Gregory Mark Abernathy; two daughters, Rhonda Carlsen and husband, George, and Sondra Birdsong and husband, Doug; four sisters, Margaret Liggan, Muriel Yarborough, Gloria Alley and Barbara Satterwhite; five grandsons and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Believers Church, 4500 Peek Trail, Chesapeake, Va. 23321, by Pastor Mark Kent. Entombment will be private in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, is handling these arrangements.
