Son of Alexander Lynn (1806-1892) and Ann Cutler Lynn (1811-1884). Cortland's siblings included Joseph (b. 1834), Myles V. (1840-1929), Charlotte (b. 1842), Elmira (b. 1844), Lewis M (1846-1940), Deborah (b. 1849), Alexander, Jr., (1850-1913), and George Lynn (1854-1947).
Cortland Lynn was the husband of Charlotte Pope Lynn (b. 1842). Their children included Susan (b. 1860), Theodore (b. 1864), William (b. 1866), Charles (b. 1869), Howard (1872-1927), Sarah (b. 1875), Edward (1877-1954), and John Stradling Lynn (1881-1966)
According to a list of Tullytown Public Cemetery inscriptions in the Grundy Library (Bristol, Pennsylvania), Courtland served during the Civil War in "Co. I - 1st Reg. N.J. Vol." But a veterans burial card filed in 1931 lists the particulars as "Co. F. 4th N.J. Regt." New Jersey state archival records state that Courtland was NJ "Discharged at U. S. Army Gen. Hosp., Phila., Pa., Feb. 17, '63," from Company C, 4th Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers.
