James Wilburn Newlin

ARCADIA – James Wilburn Newlin passed suddenly from this life Monday evening, December 28, 2015, in the ER at Clear Lake Regional Hospital in Webster, Texas.

Born March 26, 1921 in Farmersville, Texas, JW was a lifelong resident of Arcadia from the age of 1. He attended Santa Fe ISD and was baptized in the Arcadia Christian Church at an early age. As a young boy he always dreamed of becoming a cowboy. Being a child of the Great Depression, JW worked hard his entire life and was a good provider. He worked on a dairy farm, riding a borrowed horse named "Babe", he spent hours teaching to perform tricks. He also unloaded box cars, bailed hay, helped out at his Dad's filling station, truck farmed, made milk runs to Alexandria, LA and was a boilermaker. He loved sports especially baseball, boxing and football. He was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan during Coach Tom Landry's era and was a fan of the Texas Longhorns.

JW was a World War II veteran serving in the U.S. Army's 754th Railway Shop Battalion in the European Theatre from 1942-1945. After serving his country he began long shoring at Todd Shipyard and the port of Texas City where he survived the Texas City Disaster on April 16, 1947. After his hospitalization, he married his fiancé, Verda Florence Netter, on August 5, 1947, in the Arcadia Methodist Church. Upon returning from their honeymoon in Mexico, they began to build their first home and JW was hired by Union Carbide as an operator in the Vinylite area where he shift worked for over 38 years until his retirement in 1985. He loved westerns, dancing, Big Band music and traveling, especially on cruises with his loving wife, Verda, and was devoted to his family.

JW was preceded in death by the love of his life of over 66 years, his wife, Verda Florence (Netter) Newlin; his parents, James Jethro and Hala Ann (Bush) Newlin; his brother, Henry Charles Newlin and his sister, Hazel Alice (Newlin) Gilbert.

Survivors include his two loving daughters, Debbie Newlin of Dickinson and Janie Newlin Gill and husband, Boyd of Texas City; two beloved granddaughters, Andrea and Cristina Gill both of Texas City.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 11, 2016, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, with Pastor Bill Cole officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501.

The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Meadow Glenn Personal Care Home of Dickinson, especially Aida, Roxie, Tiffany, Breanne and Felicia.
