John Henry Blessing was the youngest son of George and Julianna (Easterday) Blessing, Sr and the nephew of Lewis Easterday Sr.

His marker states: died Oct. 22, 1841, aged 34 yrs & 5 mos. This would put his date of birth as 22 May 1807. He was christened Johann Henrich Blessing on 31 July 1808 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland.

John, and two of his brothers, Jacob and Nicholas, came to Kentucky in the 1820's, probably after the death of their father and mother in 1821 and 1824, respectively, in Frederick County, Maryland.

According to Dr. Howard G. Lanham, Family Historian, Ostertag-Easterday Association of America, "Nicholas Blessing and John Henry Blessing were mentioned in an old letter as two children of George Blessing and Julianna Easterday, who moved to Kentucky. I believe that a wife's grave also has been transcribed for one of them." The wife's grave, Dr. Lanham refers to, is recorded in the cemetery next to the Whites Run Baptist church for "Mary Blessing, consort of Jacob, February 24 1790 to unreadable". This was Mary "Polly" (Shelton) Whitehead-Blessing, the wife of Jacob Blessing.

On March 28, 1828, 20-year-old John married 20-year-old Lucinda Green in Gallatin County, Kentucky. There was a letter of consent from her mother, Ann Green. John and Jacob Blessing signed the marriage bond. The marriage record lists her as Louisanna, however the consent letter is for Loucindy and all deeds, census and court records list her as Lucinda.

In May of 1829 Jacob Blessing deeded land he had received as one of the heirs of Nicholas Blessing to John. In July of the same year Polly Blessing, the widow of Jacob Blessing, relinquished her interest in land to John H. Blessing.

John and Lucinda owned land in Gallatin County, Kentucky that today is located in Carroll County. Part of the land was located on McCools Creek, which is south west of Ghent, Carroll Co., KY.

John and Lucinda had seven children:

  • George Nicholas Blessing - (1829-1907) aged 33
  • Eramus Green Blessing - (1831-1894) aged 63
  • Sarah Agnes (Blessing) Ross-Bridges - (1832-1899) aged 66
  • Emerel (Blessing) O'Neal - (1834-1860)aged 64
  • Juliet Rebecca (Blessing) Ross - (1837-1895) aged 58
  • Ann Maria (Blessing) Lyons - (1840-1901) aged 61
  • John Henry Blessing Jr. - (1842-1869) aged 27

He is buried next to his brother, Nicholas. This marker was found in April 2001. It had been buried in the dirt and covered by brush, but it was in good condition. It was not listed on previous cemetery listings. He is in the 2nd row from Whites Run Road in about the middle of the row.

At the time of John's death the 33 year-old Lucinda was pregnant and had 6 children under the age of 12. On March 27, 1844, two years and 5 months after the John's death, Lucinda married Harrison Malin in Carroll County. They moved the family to Hancock County, Illinois by the 1860 census and settled in LaPlata, Macon County, Missouri. Lucinda (Green) Blessing-Malin died December 8, 1892 and is buried in LaPlata, Macon Co.
