John L. Spake was born on the farm Orremåla, Djursdala Parish, Kalmar län, Sweden, March 20, 1839, and died in Los Angeles, Cal., Friday, Dec. 23, 1898. At the age of ten years he came with his parents to America and first located in Chicago, but after spending two years there the family removed to Princeton where Mr. Spake had since continued to reside, with the exception of about five years, during which time he was engaged in business in Galesburg, Ill.
At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted as a volunteer in Co. I, 12th Regt. Ill. Inf. Later he engaged in mercantile pursuits and during the last twenty one years he has conducted a successful drug business in this city.
He was married to Miss Mary Stem, Nov. 10, 1876. His wife survives him as do his two daughters, Darlene, wife of Geo. E. Case, of Chicago, and Winnie. His other nearest relatives living are his mother, Mrs. L. M. Spake, now nearly 83 years of age, and his sisters, Mrs. J. F. Anderson, of Galesburg, Mrs. C. A. Johnson, of Princeton, Mrs. John Gustafson, of Malden, Mrs. N. W. Isaacson, of Princeton; Miss Lotta Spake and a brother, Wm. N. Spake, of Galesburg.
Mr. Spake was one of the earliest Swedish settlers in Bureau county. He was a member of the Bureau Lodge, No. 112, A.F. & A.M., of this city.
For the last few years his health has not been good. Upon the advice of his physicians, he left, on Dec. 19, accompanied by his wife, for California, in the hope that the change of climate would be beneficial to him. A telegram was received on the 22nd announcing his safe arrival at Los Angeles. He passed away on the 23rd .
He was a great lover of flowers, and took great delight in decorating his store with plants and vines. Often, when he had a little time to spare, he made a visit to the greenhouses and spent a happy hour admiring the floral beauties.
His remains were taken in charge by Bureau Lodge and accompanied by Ferris Post, G.A.R., as an escort, to Oakland cemetery and laid to rest amid Masonic honors.
