Son of John and Rhoda (Hunt) Burns.

George E. Burns married Mary J., born in Maine, and they had several children.

On 9 Sep 1858, after the death of his first wife, George, 35, married Ann Crane, daughter of James and Ann Winter, born in Ireland, at Grafton, Massachusetts, in a second marriage for both. (She was the widow Crane.)

On 9 Dec 1861 George mustered into service with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts.

He was declared missing in action on 17 Sep 1862 at The Battle of Antietam, Washington County, Maryland. He was wounded on the right thigh on 4 Jul 1863 at The Battle of Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania.

He died (at 3rd Division, 5th Corps Hospital) on 14 Jul 1863 at Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, of wounds. He was 40 years, 5 months and 14 days old.

On 9 Aug 1863 A. Hennington made application for a pension as guardian to George's surviving dependants, and received certificate number 137751.
