Sandlin, Gerald “Jerry” (“Bud” to his siblings), 83, of Del City died Monday, December 28, 2015, in Del City, Oklahoma. Gerald was born January 29, 1932, in Wagoner, OK, to Elsie Mae Trout Sandlin and Henry Cleland Sandlin.

Gerald was sent to school early when his brother Henry went to school and then upon graduating high school joined the Navy under the influence of Henry.

He is preceded in death by his parents, as well as all but one of his siblings: Cullen “Joe,” Retha, Reba, Robert, Henry “Hank,” Richard “Dick,” and two who died as young children. His sister, Mary “Louise” Carroll, lives in Lufkin, Texas.

Gerald had a penchant for artistic design and mechanical interests, so he was directed to electronics and supply in the Navy. After serving in the Korean conflict and receiving an honorable discharge, he became an architectural draftsman with an Associate’s degree from Muskogee Junior College with additional college hours at OSU and OCU. He worked for several architectural firms in the OKC area and retired from similar work for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. During his lifetime and working career, he continued lifelong learning by refining construction skills and remodeling his home, by trying to restore a classic car, by enrolling in welding classes and producing some household items, by experimenting with cooking and baking, and by taking up camping/fishing adventures.

Gerald is survived by his three adult children with grandchildren and great-grandchildren: daughter, Jerry Diane (Sandlin Ferguson) Trout Harwood of OKC; daughter, Sandra LaVerne (Sandlin Webb) Roark of OKC; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Charles and Kim Sandlin of Yukon; grand-daughters by Sandra: Melissa Ann Wells (husband, Josh) and Gabrielle Diane Rains (husband, Ryan) and grand-daughters by Robert and Kim: Amber Leigh Behrens and Elizebeth Michelle Sandlin; great-grandchildren: Jolie Paris Wells, Asher Reign Wells, Ellie Grace Wells, Charles “Charlie” Wesley Rains, Rilynn Brielle Rains, Jack Anthony West. Emma Cadence Sandlin, Sophie Beatrice Lovelace. In addition to his sister in Texas, Gerald is survived by his nephew (Mary and Don’s son), Don Carroll, Jr, and his wife, Sharon, and their son, Donnie, all of Texas; his niece, Barbara June Hall (Retha and Andrew Cooper’s daughter), of Hulbert, Oklahoma. Also he is survived by Mary Sandlin, sister-in-law, of Shawnee Mission, Kansas, and nephews (sons of Richard and Mary), Brian, Mark, and James Patrick. Gerald is survived by his ex-wife, Rita LaVerne Akin Sandlin, of Midwest City; and by marriage a number of supportive nephews and nieces: Jimmie Wayne and Betty Knowles, Glenda Ruth and Ronald Freeman, Richard and Kit Sparger, Howard Dorsett, Jr, and Alice Quiroga Stella Sparger, Joe Ronald and Sherrie Jeanne Sparger, along with many great-nieces and great-nephews—some taking a special interest: Nancy and Dan Olson, Shannon Claxton, Jason Knutson, Steven Michael Rizer, & Kevin Scott Rizer.
