Sheldon Montgomery was born May 18, 1922, in Denver, Colo., to Hardy Richard and Eulah Maxwell Montgomery. He spent his youth growing up in multiple southern states with his siblings H.R., Max, and Marguerite. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the Reg Army where he was trained as an airplane mechanic, but he had higher aspirations and wanted to become a pilot. After completing the required training in 1943, he became a pilot and was made a 2nd Lt. in the AUS. This was just in time for him to be based in England, where he flew the B-24 as part of the 446th Bomber Group in missions over Germany. He married Helen Gates in September of 1944 and their only child, Mark Sheldon, was born nine years later. He continued in the military until he retired from the USAF as a Lt. Col. in 1963.
While in the service Sheldon was able to continue his education and earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1958. Upon his military retirement he relocated his family to Redlands, Calif., taking a position with TRW. Education being so important to him, while working he went to school evenings to get his master's degree from USC and his Ph.D in human resources from the United States International University in 1975. With that degree he headed up a master's program through the University of Redlands Whitehead Center in human resources management in the late 1970s and '80s.
It wasn't all work and studying for Sheldon. He took enormous pride in his son, becoming an assistant Boy Scout leader, coaching sports teams and attending all those events that involved Mark. He and Helen enjoyed their bridge games and social life. And he loved playing golf. On top of all that, in his 60s he became an avid runner and biker, completing a couple of marathons. His other love was traveling around the U.S. in his van, sometimes visiting relatives in the South and many trips to Northern California to spend time with his grandkids. He loved spending time with his family.
Sheldon will be greatly missed by his daughter-in-law, Jeanine; grandchildren, Matthew (Erin), David (Sara) and Jamie; great-grandchildren, Rosalie, Grant, Adam and Abby; and a host of other family and friends.
A committal service will be held at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.n on Jan. 8."
