“Portland Airman Wins Decoration – The air medal posthumously awarded to PFC Frank O. Schackman, United States marine corps, for meritorious achievement in aerial flight as radioman-gunner for a scout bomber during action against the Japanese in the Solomons in August 1942, has been presented to the flier’s brother, David H. Schackman, 5112 S.E. 49th avenue, by Maj. E. P. Dupras, officer in charge of the marine corps recruiting station at Portland.
The citation related that Schackman, participating in day and night flights without fighter escort over enemy-controlled territory, aided in persistent searches for Japanese forces attempting to reinforce their positions on Guadalcanal. On August 25 and 28, 1942, he rendered valuable service in destroying or driving off strong Japanese reinforcements of cruisers, transports and destroyers, subsequently assisting in destructive attacks on hostile landing barges in the Solomons area.”
