His father was Christian Redies; his mother, Wilhelmina. He had one brother, Charles (1867); and four sisters: Bertha (1875, Mrs. Richard Dustin Hunt), Albertina 'Tina' (1869, Mrs. Ferdinand 'Fred' Boekel), Hattie (1864, Mrs. August Laib), and Ottilie 'Tillie' (1877, 2nd wife of Rev. S. Herman Schwab, married in 1909. He is buried with his 1st spouse, Marie Bauer; Tillie with her parents).

He and his family immigrated from Germany in 1881 and settled in Saline County, Nebraska where he was naturalized at the age of ten.

There he married Minnie Freude (1880-1970) on January 28, 1899 in Pleasant Hill Precinct.

The couple's three children were:

Harry W. Redies, born 13-Oct-1899 Pleasant Hill, Saline, Nebraska; died Jan-1974 in Springview, Keya Paha, Nebraska. Wife: Helen [Wolthoff] Redies (1904-1988).

Mabel Ellen [Mrs Dykeman] born 21-Apr-1905 in Crete, Saline Nebraska; died in 1992.

Alice Irene [Mrs Mansheim] (1908-1999) born Jan, Nebraska.

By 1910, the family had relocated to Wewela (Augusta Pct), Tripp County, South Dakota. From 1920, the couple were residents of Keyapaha Township, Tripp County, South Dakota, 7 miles east of Wewela and 22 miles southeast of Colome, where Fred was a "general farmer".
