PLEASANT GARDEN - MARVIN FINCH HOLT, 92, PASSED away peacefully on Saturday, December 26, 2015. A Graveside Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, at New Elam Christian Cemetery in New Hill, NC. The family will receive friends from 6:00 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28 at Forbis & Dick, Pleasant Garden Chapel. Marvin was born in Chatham County to John Harrison & Addie Hearn Holt on December 13, 1923. He moved to Greensboro in the Fall of 1945 and in 1946 he & his brother, Thurmond started Holt Brothers Transfer Trucking. Marvin hauled the first load of bricks that Boren Clay Products in Pleasant Garden produced. In 1955 Marvin bought 52 acres of land in Pleasant Garden. He sold a total of 19 acres of land on which the Pleasant Garden Community Center now sits. In 1958 he started his excavating business, Marvin Holt Backhoe Service, and did extensive work around the Greensboro area for 26 years, including digging the footings & storm drains for the original Greensboro Coliseum, The Natural Science Center and the Bird Aviary at the N.C. Zoo. Marvin had a deep love of nature & agriculture. Every summer, his goal was to have a ripe tomato by July 4th. He was a lifetime member of New Elam Christian Church. Marvin loved to deer hunt, having killed 69 deer, 24 of them with his bow. He won numerous awards while he was a member of Guilford Bowhunters. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Ernest, Thurmond, Little John and an infant brother; sisters, Lila Howard, Pauline Truelove & Thelma Kelly, and son-in-law, Nat Brooks. Those left to cherish his memory are children, Susan Holt Brooks of Smithfield, Karen Holt Meredith (Curt) of Bahama, Finch Holt (Sherri) of Ruffin and Talitha Holt of Pleasant Garden; grandchildren, Jane Gaskins (Kevin), Page Brooks, Tyler Meredith, Addie Meredith, Barrett Meredith, Carrie Meredith, Harrison Holt, Richard Holt, Troy Hensley & Jake Hensley; three great-grandchildren & numerous nieces and nephews.He was a loving father and was always so proud of each of his children and their accomplishments. He was one of a kind and will be greatly missed by many. There will always be a void left in our hearts.
