Adolph emigrated on ship "GH Wappus" travelling from Hamburg via Melbourne arr. 31/3/1849


In Adolph's early years he followed the trade of cigar maker in Hamburg, later moving to Breslau. Here he met Mr. Seppelt, and in 1848 came out to Australia under contract, working at Seppeltsfield for a year. He then went to work for Messrs. Gerke and Rodemann as a cigar maker in Adelaide, and after a trip to the Victorian goldfields, he set up his own tobacconists shop. In 1865 he entered into partnership with G.H.C. Meyer as general agents and grain merchants. In 1866 Adolph Bartels was elected as representative of Hindmarsh ward on the City Council, a position he held for four years. In 1871 he was elected Mayor and held this position until 1873. [SLSA B 5671]


Adolph HF Bartels became proprietor of the King of Hanover Hotel in Rundle Street Adelaide after he married Rudolphine in 1855. She died in 1862 and his 2nd spouse Anna Weidenbach then took on the licensee role. AHF died in 1878 whereupon a major refit of the hotel was undertaken by other family members.
