American Cinematographer, Producer and Director. Wexler was a two-time Academy Award-winning cinematographer and the writer-director of the landmark 1969 film 'Medium Cool'. After a year at UC Berkeley, he dropped out in 1941 to join the merchant marines and by the end of World War II, he had become a second officer. After his service, he received financial backing from his father to open a small movie studio in Des Plaines, Illinois, where he produced a few industrial films for businesses. In 1947, he closed his studio and began working as a freelance assistant cameraman and by the late '50s, he had begun amassing feature film credits as a cinematographer. Wexler won his first Oscar in 1966 for his black-and-white photography on 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' and won his second Oscar for 'Bound for “Glory' (1976). He also received Oscar nominations for best cinematography for 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' (1975), 'Matewan' (1987) and Blaze' (1989). Among his other feature film credits as a cinematographer are 'America, America' (1963), 'The Best Man' (1964), 'The Loved One' (1965), 'In the Heat of the Night' (1967), 'The Thomas Crown Affair' (1968), 'Colors' (1988) and 'The Babe' (1992). In 1969, he made his feature-film directorial debut with 'Medium Cool', a low-budget film that he wrote, directed and produced. The film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2003. Wexler, who was named one of the 10 most influential cinematographers in movie history in a survey of International Cinematographers Guild members, became the first active cameraman to receive the American Society of Cinematographer's Lifetime Achievement Award in 1993, and is one of the few cinematographers to have received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, died of natural causes.
