Leon Thornton, 101 of Port Huron, passed away Wednesday, December 16, 2015 in Marwood Nursing & Rehab.

He was born, Ernest Robinson, to Charlie William Robinson and Adelaide Alexander on Feb. 14, 1914 in Prattville, AL. As was the case with many black males, Leon left the south at a very young age under a cloud. He ventured north to reside with an uncle, Willie Alexander, in Port Huron. He later met and married Fannie Mae Britton on Feb. 12, 1939.

Leon worked for McDonalds for 47 years. He was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church since 1940 and served several years on the Trustee Board including four years as chairman. In an ever changing world Leon maintained a never ending quest for adventure. In his early 90s he returned to his hometown, Prattville, AL where he lived independently for 6 years and enjoyed being the senior member of the family, surrounded by nieces, nephews, and cousins. He continued to serve and honor God as an active member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church.

Leon is survived by his four children, Leon Thornton of Fremont, CA, Charles Thornton, East Lansing, MI, and Brenda & Frederick W. Thornton, both of Port Huron; one grandson, Charles Keith Thornton; three great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Leon Anthony Thornton.

A service in Leon's memory will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015 in Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. After the service all are invited to join the family at a Repast in McGivney Banquet Center, Ravenswood and Range Roads beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery at a later date.
