Some claim he was the son of Laughlin Terry Fannin, but I've not seen the documentation (please share with Fanning DNA Project). Whether he was the son of Laughlin or not, he was most certainly not descended from Edmund Fanning b. c1620 Ireland d. 1683 Stonington CT as this original Find A Grave record suggested. This is fact proven by Y-DNA, as descendents from Edmund and Bryan are two entirely different haplogroups (https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/fanning/about/results).
