Jane Grant Gilmor was the eldest child of wealthy merchant William (1775-1829) and Mary Ann Smith Gilmor (1779-1852). On February 24, 1818 she married Benjamin Chew Howard (1791-1872) the son of Revolutionary leader and Governor of Maryland, Col. John Eager Howard (1752-1829). As Mrs. B.C. Howard she wrote the charity cookbook "Fifty Years in a Maryland Kitchen" in 1873.
