John Hines Travis, 88, of Asheville, NC, passed away on June 21, 2018. He was born in Danville, son of William Mattox Travis and Sara Mae Hines. He attended George Washington High School. He served in the U.S. Army. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI). He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration. He had a passion for electronics and amateur (ham) radio. He was one of a small group of amateur radio operators that started The Southern Appalachian Radio Museum, Inc. He is survived by his daughters, Sara McAlpine (Douglas) and Mary Lou Travis; three grandchildren. John was also predeceased by his wife, Mary Lane Stembridge Travis; a son, John Travis Jr.; a brother, William Travis. Burial will in Mountain View Cemetery.
