He was born June 30, 1931 in rural Sac County, one of ten children of Belle (Jansen) and Claus Peters.
He married the love of his life Barbara Hott in 1951 and lived for many years in Sac City, IA before moving to Marshalltown in 1966 to work for Harker's Wholesale Meat Company.
As a regional sales manager, he helped Harker's become a national leader in the wholesale meat business. He retired from Harker's in 1991, after which he worked for Warnell Trucking of Marshalltown for several years before retiring for good in 2009.
He passed away peacefully at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines surrounded by family.
He is survived by his three children: Steven (Randi) of Ames, IA; Debra of Eldora; and Michael (Teresa) of Marshalltown. He is also survived by two sisters, Wanda Martin of Independence, IA and Judy Lympus (John) of Cedar Rapids; and brother Donald Peters (Connie) of Washburn, IA; twelve grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and dozens of cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 50 years Barbara (Bobbie) and six siblings.
Howard was the kind of man who lit up any room when he entered it. With a twinkle in his eye, and a quick sense of humor, he charmed everyone he met. He had a story for every occasion, and especially loved telling tales of growing up on the farm with his large and loving family. His warm and generous personality will forever serve as an example for his children, grandchildren and extended family. His favorite expression was "It'll work!" He said it often to encourage those around him to find their own solution, and to urge them to believe in their own capacity to work through problems.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by The Mitchell Family Funeral Home of Marshalltown. A viewing for friends and family is planned for Tuesday, December 29th from 4 pm to 7 pm at Mitchell's. A service celebrating Howard's life is planned for 10:30 am Wednesday, December 30, at Hope United Methodist Church, 2203 S 3rd Ave in Marshalltown, with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery immediately following the funeral. A lunch will be served at Hope Church following the interment.
Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in Howard's honor are encouraged to consider a contribution to Youth and Shelter Services of Marshall County.
