Bill's younger years were spent running the streets of West Baltimore. After the death of his father in 1927, his mother purchased a track of land and moved her family to Bertha Road in Anne Arundel County.
In the 1930's while working in the boiler room at Baltimore's Belvedere Hotel, Bill met and fell in love with one of the hotel maids. He and Anna Christina Gregor married and were blessed with seven children. His brother Howard Clay "Hap" Wharton and Anna's cousin, Claire Muchna Heilman, were witnesses to the wedding.
Throughout his life, Bill worked in Baltimore breweries. Gunther's was one of them. According to his daughter, Anna Mae, he enjoyed bowling, crabbing, and eating his wife's good cooking. Some of his favorite foods were chipped beef and gravy, oyster stew, and lemon meringue pie. Like his siblings, Bill was musically gifted. He taught himself how to play the harmonica and the accordion. "When Irish eyes are smiling" was a favorite tune.
He especially enjoyed being 'Pop Pop' to his many grandchildren.
