Grace H. Carpenter, age 92 of Athens passed away early Saturday morning, Dec. 26, 2015 at The Laurels of Athens. The family wishes to express their many thanks for the excellent care Grace received at The Laurels and with OhioHealth Appalachian Community Hospice services. Born March 15, 1923 in Calais, Ohio she was the daughter of the late Otto & Sallie Miller.

Grace began her employment sewing underwear for the soldiers in World War II at a Barnesville, OH factory. After her marriage and moving to Athens in 1943, she was employed at the Athens Mental Health Center. She then became a stay-at home mom for several years until she worked at Jefferson Dining Hall at Ohio University, followed by Farley’s Dry Cleaning, Belks Dept. Store, and Paulinda’s Small World. She enjoyed her work as a seamstress making clothing, draperies, upholstery and pleated skirts for Ohio University and Athens High School Cheerleaders.

She was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, Athens. She enjoyed her membership in the Athens Co. Senior Citizens where she loved socializing with her friends as well as her many bus trip adventures.

Grace is survived by her daughter, Paula Bragga of Athens; her son, Paul (Carol) Carpenter, Jr. of Athens; a daughter in law, Clair Carpenter of Scottsdale, AZ; a granddaughter, Sara (Michael) Mulcahy of Aurora, OH; four grandsons- Paul (Katie) Carpenter III of Covington, LA, Jay (Wendy) Bragga of Alexandria, VA, Todd Carpenter of Scottsdale, AZ and Clint Carpenter of Athens; eight great grandchildren- Eric, Jared, & Isaac Mulcahy of Aurora, OH, Justin, Claire, & Caitlynn Carpenter of Covington, LA, and Hunter & Alexis Appleman of Somerset, OH.

Besides her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Paul W. Carpenter, Sr. in 1996; a son, Brent Carpenter in 2002; a son-in-law, Rick Bragga in 2008; a sister, Thelma Lee Starr; and a brother, Virgil Miller.

Funeral service will be conducted Tuesday 2:00 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Pastor Carrie Ator-James officiating. Burial will be in West Union St. Cemetery, Athens. Friends may call Tuesday 12:00 noon until time of service at the funeral home.
