Born in Hampton, VA and a native of Hatteras, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Allen Ballance and Eliza James Peele Ballance and the widow of Mack Mathew Meads, Jr. She was a retired telephone operator from Carolina Telephone Company and a member of City Road United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Sawyer (Donald) and Joyce Betts (Lloyd) of Elizabeth City, NC, and Sheila Meads of Pooler, GA; a son, Mack Allen Meads (Michelle) of Elizabeth City, NC; a son-in-law, Lee Brabble of Hertford, NC; one sister, Paula Hague of Elizabeth City, NC; nine grandchildren, Donald Sawyer, Jr., Michael Sawyer, Jonathan Sawyer, Renee Britt, Matt Brabble, Chris Betts, Jomie Cartwright, Bryant Bailey, and Daniel Meads; twenty-four great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Peggy Brabble, two sisters, Olive Morgan and Elsie Austin, and a brother, Daniel Ballance.
