In 1856, he went to Kansas Territory, in a party of eastern emigrants that Dr. Calvin Cutter led.
In 1857, he met abolitionist John Brown. Eventually, he became one of Brown's men.
In 1859, he joined Brown for his attack on Harper's Ferry, Virginia, but managed to escape. Afterwards, he changed his name to Charles Plummer, to avoid being arrested.
On 19 July 1861, after the Civil War started, he joined the Twenty-first Massachusetts Volunteers, as a private.
On 8 February 1862, during the Battle of Roanoke Island, North Carolina, he died of fever, on the nearby transport Northerner, He was a first sergeant.
