James was the grandson of Andrew Elliott one of the first settlers to New Portland. Andrew started the Grist Mill business that was handed down to his son Robert Elliott and later to James.

Andrew was born in Scotland in 1739 and died at age 103 in 1842. Robert was born in 1772 and died March 11, 1847..

James married Rebecca Kasley, a native of Maine.
They had 3 children:
1. Amy G. Elliott Ramsdell (1838-1912)
2. Columbus Watson Elliott (1842-1914)
3. Mercy Elliott Butler (1843-1872)

Mercy's husband David M. Butler (1839-1903) took over the grist mill business after James.

I suggest changing James Elliot's death date to abt 1888. In the biography of his son Columbus Watson Elliott ( https://archive.org/stream/historyofstateofca00guin#page/1343/mode/1up )
it is stated about James that "At the time of his death he was seventy-four years of age."
The 1880 census shows that James Elliott age 66 and his wife Rebecca 66 were living with their son-in-law David Butler at New Portland ME. So he would have been age 74 in 1888.

James Elliot is named a son of Robert Elliot in Robert's 1847 will:

Robert Elliot (1772-1847) and his brother John Warren Elliot (c1765-1844) were sons of Andrew Elliot (1740-c1843) who founded the "Great Works" mills on Lemon Stream at New Portland ME about 1803.

Although I've found no gravestone or transcription for James Elliot, there are gravestone transcriptions and FindAGrave memorials for his wife Rebecca Elliot (FAG# 103066726) and his father Deacon Robert Elliot (FAG# 103066738) in the New Portland Cemetery. Gravestones for his brother Joseph Elliott (FAG# 103066752) and family are also there. A 1986 transcription for the cemetery includes them:

Also, transcriptions for Rebecca Elliot and Deacon Robert Elliot are on this card and the next in the Faylene Hutton collection:

It seems very likely that James Elliott would have been buried next to his wife in the New Portland Cemetery, so perhaps you could locate his memorial in that cemetery.

Hope this helps!

(I descend from James Elliot (1748-1814) brother of centenarian Andrew Elliot. The Columbus Watson Elliot biography says that Andrew was the original immigrant, but my research suggests that the immigrant may have been his father, James Elliot (c1716-1783) of Wells and Brunswick ME, or his grandfather possibly also named Andrew Elliot.)
