US Congressman. He was the son of Alfred Dockery, who also served in Congress. Oliver Dockery graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1848. He owned and operated a farm and served in the North Carolina House from 1858 to 1859. At the start of the Civil War he joined the Confederate military, but soon resigned and afterwards advocated maintaining the Union. After North Carolina was readmitted to the Union Dockery was elected to Congress as a Republican and reelected in 1868, serving one partial term and one full term, from 1868 to 1871. He ran unsuccessfully for reelection in 1870, afterwards returning to his North Carolina farm. Dockery was a Delegate to the 1875 state constitutional convention and ran unsuccessfully for Governor in 1888. In 1889 he was appointed US Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and served from 1889 to 1893.
