William Cathcart first appeared on the E. Hanover tax list in 1751 as a freeman = single, 21 & over. He signed the Feb 1769 Petition of the Inhabitants of Hanover Township against the Division of the said Township. He was a large landowner with about 270 acres in East Hanover. It was warranted 17 May 1774 (B-16-9), surveyed 1 May 1786 and patented 12 Sep 1786 (P-6-477). In 1787, he signed a document as a member of Old Hanover Congregation, approving the assignment of Rev. Jas Snodgrass.

" William Cathcart was of Irish descent, and was born in County Down, Ireland, May 2, 1728. In company with his brothers, Joseph and John, he left his native country and immigrated to the American shores, landing July 11, 1749. Andrew Cathcart, a son of William Cathcart, was born April 21, 1774, and died in 1833. He resided in Washingtonville, Derby township, Montour County, Pa., and was a watchmaker by trade. In 1799 he was joined in marriage to Margaret Russell, who bore him the following children: Sally; Robert; Mary, who died in infancy; Mary; Jane; and John R." Source has much more on son Robert and his son Andrew B Cathcart, ex-postmaster. More family data herein: The Book of Biographies of the Seventeenth Congressional District, PA, by Biographical Publishing Company, Chicago, IL and Buffalo, NY, 1899, p 420-421. Note: County Down is in Protestant Ulster of Scottish heritage. It was then simply called Ireland and in 1921 was renamed Northern Ireland.

William Cathcart (Sr. or Jr.?) purchased 270 acres 1 perch in Lancaster Co., PA (p 43) on warrant #499, in Hanover Twp., for 130 acres on 17 May 1774 and returned it 11 Sep 1786 in his name on patent P6, p 4 and survey copied B16, p 9. His lot is on the Warrantee Tract map, by Thomas Strain (warranted only) but West of the other Strain families here..

Wm Cathcart, 1807 -1845 DETAILS of land bought and sold, found on the East Hanover, Dauphin Co., PA Warrantee Tract Map (see photo) from Jan 1947. #C-33-122, 61 acres, 104 perches & allowance. Warranted 25 Sep 1807; Surveyed 8 May 1890 and Patented 6 AUg 1845 to E. H. Harting, #H-45-483. Likely for William Jr., after the passing of his father but details are missing. Follow will and other records.

His Dauphin Co. will (L-1-413) mentions his: wife Sarah, kids: Mary Clark, Jean Baird, Sarah Hutcheson, and sons: John, William, Andrew and James Cathcart. In 1776, he had 80 acres, 1 house, 1 1/2 stories high, of wood construction, a wood barn, 2 horses, 2 cattle, valued at £226. His wife Sarah and son James are buried nearby.

Wm Cathcart witnesses (and writes) David Strean's 1783 Lancaster County, PA will. Maybe his wife or sister was or was married to a Strain to have witnessed so many of their legal documents and I believe they are in his hand writing (see 1783 will photo signature).

On the 1790 Dauphin Co., PA census, William Cathcart lists 1 male 16 and under, 3 males 16 and over, 2 females, no ages, for a total of 6.

See the Historical Sketch of Old Hanover Church by Rev. Thomas H. Robinson (1828-1906) and Adam Boyd Hamilton, (1808-1896), published by the Dauphin County Historical Society, 1878, p 19, 22, 30-31, 35, 39. It has a few Cathcart entries. It includes William Cathcart, Sen, 2 May 1728 to 8 Jan 1797. Sarah Cathcart, wife of Wm, 1737 to 25 Sep 1804 and James Cathcart, 1772 to 27 Apr 1816. In Feb 1769, William signed a Petition of the Inhabitants of Hanover Township against the division of the township. On 10 May 1787, William signed a petition to pay the Rev. James Snodgrass the Old Hanover preacher. It also lists James Cathcart (buried here) and Abby Cathcart's (buried here) husband, William Cathcart, Jr., were also likely sons. There was also a John Cathcart, possible connection (see letters in this bio).

I suspect there is a strong connection to the Strains in the area. In Hanover Twp., then Lancaster Co. (later Dauphin Co.), he witnessed Thomas Strain's 1780 will, David Strean/Strain's 1783 will, both of their inventories and James Andrew's (wife was Jean Strain) 1783 will. He had very nice handwriting on the original (not recorded) wills, which match his signature. James McCreight, who married David Strain's daughter, Jennet Strain, witnessed Cathcart's will. He was a few lots away from both Thomas and John Strain, on the E. Hanover Original Warrantee Tract map. He served in the militia with David Strain in 1776 and thus has a Revolutionary War marker and flag beside his grave (see 2011 posted photo, taken in 2006). (I could guess his wife was a Strain or one of the Strain wives was a Cathcart.)

This William had a son John Cathcart. "John Cathcart, to the care of Mr. Strain, York county." Article titled a "List of Letters remaining in the Poft-Office at Lancafter," 19 Dec 1771 issue of the Pennsylvania Gazette (Philadelphia), p 4. Perhaps a connection to Rev. John Strain who died in York Co., PA in 1774 and had a dear brother David (court doc). David Strain resided in W Hanover in Lancaster through his death in 1783. I suspect Cathcart could have been a Strain wife's maiden name (see above).

Note, a Rev. Robert Cathcart, 1759 born in Coleraine, Ire - 1849 (FaG #62852667)is buried at the First Presbyterian Churchyard in York Co., PA

Few Cathcart records are found in the area, so take note of Pennsylvania Genealogies: Scotch-Irish and German, by William Henry Egle, 1898:
Page 623: Hugh Graham, Jr., the son of Hugh Graham & Mary Wallace, was born 16 Jun 1798 and he married Sarah Cathcart.
Page 625: Hugh & Sarah had Graham children: 1) Isabel, D 1852, m John C Smith and 2) Hugh, m Miss Murray.
Page 196: Samuel Becket Fleming, married Mary Cathcart. Buried here. Mary: 1806 - 10 Nov 1836, Findagrave #15843617 (likely granddaughter.)
