August J. Dielens, Col., U.S. Army, retired, peacefully entered heaven September 2, 2006. A West Point and U.S. Army War College graduate, Gus proudly served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, earning the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, Legion of Merit and many others.
His many tours of duty included the Pentagon, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and athletic director of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
Gus retired to the Tampa area to become the athletic director of the University of Tampa.
He was a member of Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Purple Heart.
Survivors include his wife, Ann; his daughter, Deborah Ann (Jim) Mackey; his son, August J. Dielens, III (Karen) and daughter, Shirley Vandiver Dielens; his stepsons, Robert and Richard (Angie) Hill and stepdaughter, Virginia (Todd) Hodges and many grandchildren.
Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, at Blount ' Curry Funeral Home, 605 S. MacDill Ave., Tampa. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to servicemen who are serving in harm's way and their families.
