*** Deputy Sheriff ***

Irene was born in Castroville, CA., the daughter of Manuel and Maggie (McIntyre) Silva.

On June 5, 1937, at Carson City, NV., Irene married Leslie Prose Barker, a salesman for Montgomery Ward & Company.

Irene was hired by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office prior to 1936. The 1937 and 1941 Salinas, CA. City Directory shows that she was a Deputy Sheriff for that agency.

It is known that she was also the stenographer for the Sheriff's Office and as such was responsible for records, booking paperwork, office management and many other things that kept things running on a day-to-day basis.

She was Deputized by Sheriff Carl H. Abbott so she could assist Deputy Sheriff-Jail Matron Alice D. Lingley in the arrest, searching, booking and transporting of females charged with crimes.

In 1991, I spoke to Irene over the phone and she told me that it was common practice for the female prisoners to be transported, via private automobile, to court and to/from other county jails, etc.

When asked if she and Matron Lingley were Deputies, she said that they were, and that they carried a small revolver pistol, their badge and a set of handcuffs in their purses!

She was a woman, working in a profession traditionally held by men. She was certainly ahead of her time.

She died at the age of 92, in her hometown of Castroville.
