Jim was born October 12, 1948 in Holton, KS to Charles and Annabelle (Tweedy) Harter. Jim grew up in Omaha, NE. He was drafted and served during Vietnam in the U.S. Army from April 11, 1968 to November 19, 1969. After serving in the Army, he lived in Dover, DE, Topeka, KS, and in 1970 he moved to Omaha, NE. In 2004, he moved to Fremont, NE to care for his sister Phyllis Barcus.
While serving in the Army he was a POW in the Vietnam War. He was the only soldier in his unit to survive. He earned multiple awards including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Campaign Star.
Jim was a successful business owner/operator, private investigator and youth group counselor. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and holding BBQ's at his home. He was a talented gardener and skilled mechanic.
He was very active with the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 18 of Fremont, serving as treasurer and Color Guard member.
He took strangers into his home and under his wing as family and then set them free. He was a brother who helped care for his sister during her battle with cancer.
He was a fiercely loyal uncle who had no problem keeping an eye on his favorite nieces. He was the first to brag about how proud he was of them and how well Theresa and Rachel took care of him everyday. He said the same about his sister, Jayne.
He is survived by sons, Corey Allmendinger and wife, Kayla of Fremont, NE, Nathan Trout of Fremont, NE; sisters and special caregiver, Jayne Barth of Fremont, NE, Fran Howell of Texas, and Margaret and husband, Jerry Neill of Newberg, OR; brother, Charles Harter of New Braufels, TX; niece and special caregiver, Theresa and husband, Bryan Macrander of Fremont, NE; great-niece and special caregiver, Rachel Tuff and husband, Ron Sullivan of Omaha, NE; nineteen grandchildren and daughter, Roxanne McElroy of Fremont, and special friend Shirley Trout.
He was preceded in death by parents; sister, Phyllis Barcus; brothers, Bill Harter and George Harter; and brother-in-law Paul Barcus and best friend, William (Bill) Barth.
Funeral Service Tuesday, January 5, 2015 at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. The Rev. David Paul officiated. Burial with Military Honors will be at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont immediately following the service.
