Steven E. Nielsen, 79, of Boise, Idaho, passed into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, December 22, 2015.

He was born in Washington D.C. September 4, 1936 to Oscar E. and Helen Stevens Nielsen. He attended Catholic School until he was 8 years old, then his family moved back to Idaho and eventually to Reno, Nevada where he completed his education, graduating from Reno High School in 1954.

While attending the University of Nevada, Reno, Steve was a member of the elite ROTC Pershing Rifle Team and traveled with them to numerous competitions. He also served in both the Nevada and Idaho Air National Guard.

In 1956, Steve and his family moved to Boise, Idaho. He attended Boise Junior College, receiving a B.A. in business.

He met Kathleen Helvey Nielsen and they were married in August of 1958. They were blessed with the birth of a son, Michael Edward, and a daughter, Susan Marie.

While attending B.J.C., he applied for his life insurance license and was granted special permission to receive it since he was not yet 21. He began his career with John Hancock and made Time magazine when the company inaugurated a mobile service van that served southern Idaho.

From there he joined United Heritage (formerly Grange Mutual Life) in the Marketing Department, retiring in 1994 as Vice President of Marketing. It was here that he earned his Chartered Life Underwriting Designation, LOMA & FMLI certificates, and belonged to the Idaho State Estate Planning Council. While with United Heritage, he and Kathy enjoyed many special friendships and convention sites.

Steve was a member and often chairman/president of a number of organizations. He was Chairman of the Board for Mercy Medical Center, where he also chaired the “Fore Hospice” Golf tournament for 25 years; board member of Med Now, Humphreys Diabetes Center, Chair of the Board for Gem State Insurance, member of Pioneer Federal Credit Union board, the Finance Chairman for the American Legion Department of Idaho, Past Commander of American Legion Post #136, board of Habitat for Humanity, Elder for Trinity Presbyterian Church, member of Hillcrest Country Club where he chaired the transportation committee for the Albertson Open and served as 2010’s General Chairman, the boards of Boise Rifle and Pistol Club, Oregon Trail Rough Riders, E-da-how Gun Club, Ada County Drainage Ditch District #3, and a Boise School Volunteer.

Steve is survived by Kathy, his wife of 57 years; his son, Mike (Lynae) Nielsen, of Boise; his daughter, Susie Nielsen, of Boise; brother, John Nielsen, of Idaho Falls; grandsons: Matthew and Nathan Taylor; two “superior” great-grandchildren; plus several nieces and nephews.

The family is grateful for the care of Dr. Dan Zuckerman and his MSTI staff and the special ladies of St. Luke’s Hospice Care: Anna, Megan, Julie, and Shelley.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, December 28, 2015 at Eagle Christian Church, 4601 S. Surprise Way, Boise, ID 83716. There will be a private family burial.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Idaho Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, or charity of your choice.
