Mike passed away peacefully in his Austin home on Wednesday at noon from complications arising from mesothelioma. Mike was a long-time resident of Austin, Texas where he was Director of Foundry Operations for Advanced Micro Devices from 1993 to 2005, with responsibility for the production of over one billion dollars of semiconductor products per year. Despite his successes in life, Mike had a modest upbringing. He graduated from St. John's High School in Loogootee, Indiana. At St. John's, Mike was an accomplished basketball player. After high school, Mike followed in his father's footsteps by joining the Navy in 1958 where attained the rank of Engineman I; he served on several submarines, including the nuclear-powered Andrew Jackson (SSBN 619). During his tenure on the Jackson, Mike was selected to present a plaque to President Kennedy for the first successful test launch of the Polaris-class missile. While in the Navy, Mike married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Ann Nicholson, in 1961, and upon receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1965 he, his wife and son moved back to Indiana where he attended college at Purdue University, earning a B.S. in chemical engineering. Upon graduating in 1969, Mike and his family moved to Dallas, Texas where he joined Texas Instruments at the dawn of the semiconductor era. Over the course of his career, Mike held numerous positions at Intel, Seeq Technology, Thompson-Mostek and AMD. While at Intel, Mike led Fab 7 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to launch the first product in the world made from six-inch wafers. In his personal life, Mike was an unselfish and caring husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Larkin Van Hoy. He is survived by his wife, Pat, his son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Robin Stemaly (Evansville, IN), and two grandchildren, Jordan Elizabeth (11) and Nicholas Andrew Van Hoy (10), mother, Florence, sister, Judy Stewart, and brother, Leo. He was a devoted grandfather and could never spend enough time with his grandchildren. No task was too big whether it was in his professional or personal life. He also served poor and disadvantaged families, finding ways to make a difference in their lives, through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and Habitat for Humanity. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 15th at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 N. Lamar Austin, Texas. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 17th at St. John Neumann Catholic Church at 5455 Bee Caves Rd. Austin, Texas with a reception to follow. Mike will be returned to Loogootee, Indiana where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 19th at St John's Catholic Church, and he will be laid to rest at his family's plot in St. John's Catholic Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, Mike requests that donations be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We wish to thank those of you who have helped us and kept us in your thoughts and prayers, especially Hospice Austin, caring neighbors and friends, his oncologists Drs. Fein and Dowell and Father Jim Evans. Thank you God for blessing us with such a wonderful person. We will miss you very much, but you will always be with us. We will meet again.
