Herbert P. Scharenbroch, age 90, of 16031 Co. Rd. X (School Hill), Kiel, died Sunday evening, July 3, 2011, at Homestead Care Center, New Holstein. He was born Sept. 30, 1920. in School Hill, son of the late William and Mary (Miller) Scharenbroch. He attended Holy Trinity Grade School.

On May 15, 1943, Herbert married Bernice Karstaedt at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in School Hill. He farmed in the town of Meeme from 1943-1976 and also worked at Tecumseh Products, New Holstein, for 34 years, retiring in 1983.

Herbert was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, School Hill, and also was a member of the American & Wisconsin Quarter Horse Association. He was a lover of horses and won many awards through the American and Wisconsin Quarter Horse Association. In retirement, he was involved with and sold produce at the Manitowoc Farmers Market for 25 years and enjoyed dancing and polka music.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Bernice, School Hill; two daughters, Scharleen (John) Schmahl, New Holstein; Sandy (Chuck) Thiel, Kiel; grandchildren, Tim and Trish Schmahl, Kimberly; and Chris Hager, Valerie and Ian Dumbleton; and great-grandchildren, Addison and Carter Schmahl, Landon and Braylon Hager. He is further survived by his brothers and sisters, Francis Scharenbroch, Al (Agnes) Scharenbroch, Simon Scharenbroch, Anthony Scharenbroch, Ray (Caroline) Scharenbroch, Bernice (Eugene) Schnell, Betty Mae Owens; sisters-in-law, Collette Scharenbroch, Violet Scharenbroch; in-laws, Elmer (Verona) Karstaedt, Pat Karstaedt, Henrietta Marchiando, Ralph (Delores) Karstaedt, Roger (Caroline) Karstaedt, Agnes (Vernon) Vogel, Julieanne Hickmann, Virgina (Norbert) Herbst, MarJean (Glenroy) Schmitz, Larry Karstaedt, Victor Schanke; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and sister, Bernard Scharenbroch, Dorothy (Bernard) Schad, William Scharenbroch, Jr.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ruth Scharenbroch, Betty Scharenbroch, Terry Owens; and in-laws, Wilbert Karstaedt, Seraphino Marchicando, Carolyn and William Zimmerman, Alyce Schanke and Ralph Hickmann.

The funeral Mass for Herbert will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2011, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, School Hill, with the Rev. Patrick Nelson S.D.S. and Deacon James Steffen officiating. Burial will take place in the church cemetery.

Family and friends may call at the church on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, from 5 to 8 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Herbert's family would like to extend a special thank you to the nursing staff at Homestead Care Center, New Holstein, and Dr. David Deubler for the wonderful care he received.
