Alphons Scharenbroch, age 88, was born to eternal life on July 31, 2012 surrounded by his loving family.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Al was born on March 31, 1924, in School Hill to the late William & Mary (Miller) Scharenbroch. He graduated from Kiel high school in 1942. He was a proud World War II veteran, serving in the US Army in the Pacific. He married Agnes Krcma on September 4, 1948 and they were together for 63 wonderful years. He worked for Manitowoc County DHIA, Badger Breeders and retired in 1986 from the State Bank of Kiel. He had many interests outside of work and during his retirement. Al enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing cards with family, singing in the church choir, and attending many kids' and grandkids' events. He was a member of the Kiel VFW, Post 6707 . He was also a member of the Clipper City Chordsmen for 25 years. He had the opportunity to travel and was very proud of having visited all 50 states. Always active in his later years, he and Agnes hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon – twice! The first time was in 1990 when he was 66, and later in 1993 when he was 69. At 86 he traveled to Washington DC on the Old Glory Honor Flight for World War II veterans. He also truly enjoyed his "farm" in Kiel, planting thousands of trees, as a member of the Tree Conservation Program, building his cottage and just enjoying nature. In his last year, Al and Agnes spent their time between their cottage on the farm and many new friends at the Felician Village in Manitowoc.
He is survived by his wife Agnes, his daughters Kathy (Ric) Canepa, Eileen (Sean Killian) Scharenbroch, Marleen (Billy) Jackson, Joleen (Eddie) Kane, Christine (Tim) Vetter and Noreen (Tim) Eichstaedt. He is also survived by siblings Francis, Simon, Tony, Ray (Caroline) Scharenbroch, Bernice (Eugene) Schnell and Betty Mae Owens; in-laws Colette Scharenbroch, Bernice Scharenbroch, Violet Scharenbroch, Raymond Krcma, Leonard Krema, Eleanor Nelson, Beatrice (Gerhardt) Cisler, Jeanette (Karl) Kudick and Jimmy (Eileen) Krcma. He is survived by grandchildren Melissa (Brian) Pfeifer, Christian (Jenna) Canepa, Kathryn (Ryan Cameron) Canepa, Aimee Canepa, Connor and Seamus Killian, Emily (Phil) Webb, Ashley LaBelle, Cassandra & Makayla Vetter and Taylor, Megan and Noah Eichstaedt. He is also survived by step-grandchildren Andrew (Monica) Kane, and Stephanie (Jason) Russ. Great grandchildren include Madeline and Grace Pfeifer and Harper Webb. Step-great grandchild is Liliana Russ. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his son Michael, sister Dorothy (Bernard) Schad, brothers Bernard, Herb and Billy, and in-laws Ruth Scharenbroch, Betty Scharenbroch, Terry Owens, Eddie (Tracy) Krema, Johnny (Marie) Krema, Alton (Louise) Krema, Lucy (Tom) Hagstrom, Lorraine Krcma, Marie Krcma, Dolores Krema and Emil Nelson.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 am on Friday August 3, 2012 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church School Hill with Rev. Loren Nys SDS officiating and Deacon Jim Steffen assisting. Family and friends may call at the church from 9:00 am until 11:15 am when we will have brief family rites. Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery with full Military Honors performed by Kiel VFW Post 6707.
Thank you to Father Foley, the staff at Felician Village and Holy Family Hospital and Hospice for their compassion and care.
After all these years, Al is united with his son, Mike. There is a place in heaven where the hunting and fishing is wonderful, and you will find them together once again, father and son.
