SERVICES MONDAY FOR CIVIC LEADER MARK EZELL

Mark Ezell, 52, Idabel, passed away peacefully on Friday at a Texarkana hospital.

Friends said Ezell, who had lived in Idabel for 13 years, worked on many projects to help improve Idabel and was always looking for ways to make the community visitor-friendly.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Monday at the Idabel First Baptist Church, with Kent House and Britt Lesley officiating. Interment will follow in Holly Creek Cemetery.

While battling brain cancer for one year, Ezell retained his upbeat and positive personality, friends noted, and his strong love for his wife Suzie and boys Josh, 7, and Sean, 5.

A southern Oklahoma native, born in Ardmore April 28, 1955, to J.D. and June Mobley, he adopted Idabel and McCurtain County as his own, said Vickie Smith, who worked alongside Ezell on Idabel Chamber of Commerce projects for years and succeeded him as Idabel Chamber manager.

"The one thing that amazed me was that for him to not be from here, he was drawn to this area and he really loved this community," said Smith. "Everything he did was focused on this community. He wanted to get into anything and everything."

Ezall was Idabel Chamber of Commerce manager for a little over a year and a half, and before that was Chamber president and Kiamichi Owa-Chito festival chairman.

"He was very instrumental in the Idabel Centennial project," Smith said. He chaired this project in 2002 working with Patti Harris, former Chamber manager and now Idabel Main Street manager.

Ezell was also chairman of the Idabel Planning and Zoning Board, Rotary Club president, Little Dixie Community Action Agency board member, Idabel Main Street board member, and active as a volunteer for McCurtain County Teen Pregency Prevention and Kids at Heart.

He was an active member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Idabel, where he served as one of the leaders of the AWANA program for youth.

Ezell, who had been the mayor of an Oklahoma community (Wilkes) when he was 29 years old, had many innovative ideas for Idabel's future and set his sights on running for the Idabel mayor job. He had to withdraw his name from the ballot due to his illness but still garnered a sizeable number of votes during the spring election.

"You could always count on Mark to volunteer," said Henry Moy, director of the Museum of the Red River and a close friend.

"This loss is a big blow to the community."

After retiring from 26 years with Oklahoma Natural Gas, Ezell worked for a time in marketing at the museum. He was also a member of the museum board.

He established a business of his own, moving to Paris, Texas, but moved back to Idabel after a year because he missed McCurtain County and his friends and wanted his boys to grow up here, said Moy.

Smith, who along with Harris spent much time giving support to Suzie Ezell during his final days, said Mark was a fighter.

"He loved Suzie so much. He said he didn't know how he lived without her all those years," Smith said. "He was always amazed by everything the boys did. He would get a big grin on his face when he would talk about things they did."

Smith said that there are many people who are active and influential in their communities, but she believes Ezell's impact went further, to the core of enjoying life.

"How many can say that they influenced a whole community as much as he did?" she asked. "I haven't talked to anyone the last few days that wasn't really touched by Mark. He was a true friend."
