Earl O. Turner, 81, passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 3rd, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Services will be on Friday, Oct. 7th at 2 p.m., at Waples Memorial United Methodist Church in Denison. Reverend Roy Spore will officiate.

Visitation with the family will be at 1 p.m., at the church.

Turner was born June 27, 1930 in Jones County, near Hamlin, Texas, to Clemmie Acklin Turner and Clyde O. Turner. His early years were spent near Hamlin and then California. During World War II, his father was employed as maintenance foreman at Lockheed Aircraft in California.

Upon returning to Texas, his family settled in Irving, where Earl graduated from high school in 1948. Upon graduation, he was awarded a football scholarship to Texas A & I, now Texas A & M at Kingsville. He lettered all four years and was co-captain and all-conference tackle of the then Texas Conference, in his senior year.

In 1952, he married his college sweetheart, Betty Jonas of Mathis and began his coaching career at La Feria, Texas. He coached at Lyford, where his team went to the quarter-finals and he was named coach of the year for District 32A by the San Antonio Express News. During this time, he earned his Master's degree from A & I. He coached at Irving before coming to Denison as line coach in 1961. Upon giving up coaching, Turner taught Distributive Education and then was in charge of the Student Assignment Center. He taught driver's education for many years.

Turner enjoyed being with his family, football games, boating and camping, track meets, and playing golf. As his disease progressed, the highlight of his day was going out to breakfast at Nick's Restaurant.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; sons David Turner and wife Sylvana, Mark Turner and wife Ruby; daughters Tammy Riddle and husband Doni, and Deborah Wise and husband Kevin Doherty. He is also survived by granddaughters Alana Turner, Theresa Turner, Erin Riddle, Alyssa Riddle, Amelia Doherty and grandson Kai Doherty.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Dorothy Weber and Patricia Burns, and grandson Brian Turner.

Arrangements are entrusted to Bratcher Funeral Home, 401 W. Woodard St., Denison, TX 75020 (903) 465-2323. Further information is on our website at www.bratcherfuneralhome.com.
