Lowell Vance Thompson, 84, of Alpena passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at home after an extended illness surrounded by his loving family.

Lowell was born in Cheboygan on March 8, 1931, to the late Samuel John Thompson and Hellen (Littlefield) Thompson-Peck-Henning and married Byrdie Thompson on August 13, 1955, in Flint, Michigan.

Mr. Thompson served proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War.

Lowell worked at Abitibi for over 42 years, retiring in 1998. His passion for camping and trout fishing with his wife and very dear friends, the late Beverly and Jerry Witulski, were well known. Later in life he became very accomplished in photography. His pride were his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Byrdie, who he was married to for 60 years; 4 sons, Earl (Ellen Clearwood), Vance (Alice), Vincent (Judy Rose), Brian; 5 grandchildren, John Adamski, Rebecca, Christopher (Angie) Thompson, Melissa (Spencer) Mendel, Gage Thompson; 6 great grandchildren; a brother, Allen (Shirley) Thompson; and several nieces & nephews.

Lowell has been taken for cremation. Per his request, no funeral will take place. A gathering of his family and friends to celebrate his life will occur on Wednesday, December 23, 2015, at the Fraternal Order of Eagles located at 1960 M-32 West in Alpena from 2 – 6 p.m.
