Mabel (Enbody) Eggleston, 100, passed away Monday, December 7, 2015 at the Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland, Wyoming.

Mabel was born on May 3, 1915 in Amelia, Nebraska to Elmer and Mabel (Gillman) Enbody the second child of eight for the family.

At the age of 13, she moved with her family to Douglas, Wyoming area, eventually settling on a ranch along LaBonte Creek 21 miles south of town.

In August 1934, she married the love of her life Jack Eggleston to this union three children were born, Warren Thomas “Tom”, Shirley Anne, and Jerry Russell.

In typical Wyoming fashion she and her husband both had many different jobs outside of the home and ranch to support the ranching habit. She worked for many years driving a rural school bus route in the LaBonte community. She and Jack also worked for the forest service for many summers as fire-watch on the Black Mountain and Fletcher Park towers starting in 1950. Mabel was very proud of the 21 summers that she served as full time lookout at the Black Mountain tower from 1958 to 1979. The long hours of solitary time spent in the summers developed her writing skills and many of her adventures are chronicled in her book, Reflections from a Glass House. Mabel also became an accomplished poet during this time.

Mabel “retired” and became a caregiver for a para-pelagic woman in Rock Springs, Wyoming until 1984. When the ranch was sold in 1982, Mabel fulfilled a lifelong dream of a vacation to Hawaii. After her retirement from official caregiving, she lived for a year in Nebraska with her sister Betty, finally settling in Wheatland where she resided until her death.

Mabel spent a good deal of time traveling around the country to visit family and friends scattered from coast to coast. Everyone looked forward to these visits from Grandma Eggle and these trips continued until 2013.

Mabel is survived by her son, Jerry Eggleston; sisters, Betty Winings and Estella Blomgrin; eleven grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren; twenty-one great-great grandchildren; and eight great great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Warren, George, and Jim Enbody; sisters, Francis Ballow and Helen Bilstien; two children, Warren Thomas and Shirley Ann.
