Grandma Banks (Maria Ortiz Banks) was born Dec. 2, 1901, in San German, Puerto Rico and died April 22, 1999.

She was the grandmother to all her grandchildren's friends and many others. She lived a full and rewarding life, first as the wife of Tomas Banks (deceased) and as a teacher by his side in the Dominican Republic.

Later she lived for many years with her beloved son, Eitel F. Banks; her daughter-in-law, Elisa Avila Banks (deceased); and her "ninos" Gretchen, Heidi Fritz, Eitel (Banks) and Elisa Blackston, traveling all over the world. She had an extraordinary loving relationship with her great-grandson Derek Blackston-Banks.

Her family cannot convey in words the love and gratitude they feel for being blessed by her presence for so many years. Thanks to all of you who held Grandma in a special place in your hearts. A special thanks to Grandma's friend Mimi Velez and her family, also to Dr. Catherine Maxwell who Grandma said kept her well through the years.
