World War II Veteran

Chester Calvin (Chet) Harris, 91, formerly of Turbotville, PA, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2015 in the Emmanuel Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation at Danville, PA.

Born in Limestoneville, Montour County, PA, on Thursday, November 13, 1924, he was the son of the late Thomas B. and Mary (Ball) Harris.

Chet was the widower of Alveretta M. (Michael) Harris who preceded him in death on November 13, 2014.

He honorably served during the Second World War with the U.S. Marines. His unit landed on Iwo Jima and was present when the flag was raised. Chet was the recipient of the Purple Heart as a result of injuries received on Iwo Jima.

He was employed as a welder by Sprout -Waldron at Muncy, PA retiring in 1988. Prior to his employment at Sprout-Waldron, Chet had been employed hauling logs by Sones Saw Mill and was later employed at the Turbotville Block Co.

Chet was a member of the Radiant Light Assembly of God at Muncy, PA and attended the New Testament Assembly of God at Millville, PA. He enjoyed woodworking, bowling, fishing, hunting and trapshooting.

He is survived by two daughters, Sandra and husband Ronald Johnston, Danville, PA; Sally D. Lyons, Millville, PA and one sister, Blanche Wilson, Turbotville, PA. Chet is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, H. Wayne Lyons and five siblings, Lois Lucas, Judy Faust, Gladys "Sis" Foreman, Thomas Junior Harris, S. Stanley Harris.

Funeral services will be conducted from the Church of God, 7008 Route 405 Highway, Montgomery, PA at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 28, 2015 with Pastor Isaac Wilson officiating. Interment will be in The Muncy Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the church. Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Turbotville Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will provide the flowers. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Church of God, 7008 Route 405 Highway, Montgomery, PA 17752.
