Opera Singer. A mezzo-soprano, she is remembered for her performances at several of her country's major venues. Raised in what was then West Germany, she studied at the Hochschule of Berlin as well as in Master Classes conducted by legendary baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. From the early 1990s on she built her career, initially as a recitalist at London's Wigmore Hall as well as with the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cologne Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic, and other top-drawer ensembles. Stella began appearing at the Frankfurt Opera and elsewhere, her repertoire including Cherubino in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", the title Hansel of Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel und Gretel", Octavian from Richard Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier", Nicklausse of Jacques Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann", and Dorabella from Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte", as well as roles in several works by her husband Christian Jost. Continuing her concert appearances, she sang works by Schumann, Rossini, and others, earning particularly high marks for Mozart's C-minor Mass. A company member with the Komische Oper of Berlin from 2006, she was professor at Dusseldorf's Robert Schuman Music School from 2014 until her death. Stella died following an extended battle with cancer leaving a legacy of both opera and recital records.
