Captain C. R. Berry, Prominent in G.A.R. and Fraternal Circles, Passes Away

The oldest member of the I.O.O.F. in the State of Utah, Captain Charles R. Berry, 80 years of age, civil war veteran, died Saturday night at his residence, 374 Sixth Avenue. His death was due to senility. Captain Berry had been a resident of Salt Lake for twenty-four years and during the past fourteen years had been a watchman at the Twentieth ward water tank in City Creek canyon.

Captain Berry was born in Jacksonville, Illinois, May 2, 1834. At the outbreak of the civil war he enlisted in K Company of the Seventeenth Illinois infantry. He served in this company during the entire war. He fought in the battle of Gettysburg and through the Wilderness campaign as captain of his company.

Between 1865 and 1890 Captain Berry prospected in Colorado, making and losing several fortunes during the twenty-five years. In 1890 he moved to Salt Lake and engaged in the grocery business. After a few months he was appointed watchman at the water tank in the Twentieth ward and kept the position until a few days before his death.

Captain Berry was the ranking member of the I.O.O.F., both in point of age and fellowship, in the state, being a past noble of Lodge No. 2, with which he affiliated twenty-four years ago. He was a member of the Maxwell-McKean post, G.A.R.

Funeral services will be held at the I.O.O.F. temple this morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by the lodge. Interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery under the auspices of the Maxwell-McKean post.
