"David Hardie Burkhart, a lifelong resident of Pollock Pines, Calif., passed away on Dec. 9, 2015, at the age of 65.

Dave worked in the logging industry for many years until 1983, when he was severely injured on the job and permanently disabled. Over the years, health complications traced back to this accident took their toll on him, and his health and mobility gradually declined. Throughout all this he did the best he could with nary a complaint.

Dave was called Cave Man (Cave for short) by his many friends in Pollock Pines. This name possibly originated from his tendency to avoid the barber shop for long stretches. He was always motivated to have a good firewood supply and just days before his death he was out in the front yard splitting wood.

Along with his siblings, Dave inherited the strong Burkhart family work ethic that continually showed itself despite his disability. He knew he couldn’t return to the woods, but valued any work that would allow him to support himself. For many years after his accident he worked at the Sportsman’s Hall restaurant, where he prided himself on seeing that there was a ready supply of clean dishes, pots and pans. Until he was physically incapable of doing so he volunteered at the Pollock Pines Community Center where, he managed the dish cleaning operation at many events such as Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.

Dave didn’t have much but if you wanted it he would give it to you. A lifelong bachelor, he never drove, took an airplane ride or saw too much country outside of El Dorado County, but he was pretty content with his lot in life. He loved to fish and even had a boat. Lucky for him he had friends who would tow it out to the lake.

Dave was one-of-a-kind and was loved by many who will miss him greatly. His family thanks his many friends in Pollock Pines who saw to it that he got the help he needed when he needed it. Pollock Pines just won’t be the same without Cave.

Dave was preceded in death by his father, Russell Burkhart (a logging accident in 1952); and by his mother, Evelyn (Tatum) Burkhart (2002). He is survived by his older sister, Marilyn Taylor (Larry) of Placerville; an older brother, Tom Burkhart (Cris) of Reno; and younger sister, Lynette Rush of Las Vegas; plus loving nieces, Angela Taylor Somers, Amy Marie Burkhart and Michelle Rush; and loving nephews, Mark Taylor and Jacob Burkhart.

A memorial service is being considered for a later date."
