Raised in Iowa.

Enlisted in Co. "C", 8th Iowa Infantry on 8/10/1861 as a Corporal. After being discharged for promotion, on 9/27/1862 he was commissioned into Co. "A", 25th Iowa Infantry as a Captain. During his service, he was wounded at Shiloh, Tn. on 4/6/1862; at Arkansas Post, Ark. on 1/11/1863; and at Ringgold, Ga. on 11/27/1863. He was promoted to Lt. Col. of the 25th Iowa on 6/9/1863.

After the War, he served in political offices and farmed. In 1914 and 1915, he was Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, the leading ex-soldier's organization.
