Robert White “Bob White” Brumfield passed away on December 19, 2015 following a lengthy illness.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 11:30 AM until services at 1 PM at Hartman Funeral Home of McComb. Dr. Robert H. “Dub” Darville and Steve Cox will officiate and burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery in McComb.

He was born in McComb, MS on April 28, 1930 to Dr. Robert H. Brumfield, Sr., and his wife Mrs. Helen White Brumfield. Paternal grandparents were Chancery Clerk Charles Brumfield and wife Katie F. Brumfield and maternal grandparents were J.J. White, Jr and wife, Lily H. White.

He graduated from McComb High School where he played clarinet in the band, played on two state championship football teams, and was a member of two state championship debating teams. He entered pre-law at Tulane University where he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Social Fraternity, was Tulane golf champion, and served on the Tulane debate team (he probably never lost a debate until he married Dennie!).

In early 1951, his late great uncle former Mississippi Governor Hugh White decided to run for re-election. It was while campaigning for Gov. White that he met the love of his life, Dennie Brister of Bogue Chitto, and they married the following year.

A graduate of University of Mississippi Law School, he practiced defense law in McComb his entire career. In 1957, he created the Mississippi Regional Housing Authority number VII which provided housing to low income residents in 10 counties. He served as Executive Director for MRHA for 50 years. He was a member of Miss Bar Association for 50 years. He was a member and former President of McComb Lions Club and McComb Chamber of Commerce.

He was City Judge during the Freedom Rider era, chaired the Citizens for Progress community organization, and co-authored a position paper on non-violence signed by 500 local residents committed to promoting fair treatment and equality for all races.

He also served as Attorney for SW Miss Regional Medical Center for more than a decade and was former counsel for Illinois Central Railroad. He was honored for his civic contributions by being selected as King of the 1984 Junior Auxiliary Azalea Ball.

He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, John G. Swords.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years Dennie Brister Brumfield; daughters, Janet Brumfield (Glory Sanders), Brenda Swords, and Dennie E. “Betsy” Naugle (Dr. Thomas C. Naugle, Jr); grandchildren, John Gaston Swords II and Margaret Elizabeth Swords. Other survivors are brother, Dr. Robert H. Brumfield, Jr, sister, Linda Katherine Brumfield Gerhardt and step-mother, Ann R. Brumfield.
