James Otis was born in Poultney Township, Rutland, Vemont on 4 July 1794 to Barnabas Little Otis and Mabel Turner (Otis p. 168). His father, Barnabas Otis, moved the family to New York for the 1810 census in Ontario County, Avon Township. James Otis, then nearly 18 years of age by his birth date, is serving the United States in the War of 1812 as a Private in Captain Hines Company, New York, Military (War of 1812 Pension Files). Barnabas, his father, filed pension files for the Revolutionary War from Rush in Ontario County, New York on 11 May 1818, and submitted more papers 13 Nov 1821 from Washington County, Ohio (see Barnabas Otis Pension files, File number S9612). James was married in 1819 to Ellice Bainter of Muskingum County, Ohio. Ellice was born 1799 in Ohio. Their daughter Lydia Mable Otis was born 5 Dec 1822 in Washington County. James and his older family members may not have registered on the 1820 census due to moving from New York to settle in Ohio. James is registered in Fearing Township, Washington County, Ohio on the 1830 census; his father and sister Minerva were in the same township. By the 1840 census, James had his family in Grand Township of Marion County, where he was recorded on 28 September 1850 as an age 56 farmer born Vermont, his wife Ellice age 50, sons Henry C. age 20 and John B. 17 all born in Ohio. The census marshall must have been in error, as Ellice Otis has a cemetery stone showing her death date as 25 Dec 1849 and age 50 years and two months, which is the date in Marion County mortality lists. The cemetery for Barnabas Otis and Ellice Otis is Pawpaw Cemetery in Marion County.
James and Ellice (Bainter) Otis parented six children, the oldest being Lydia Mabel born 1822, James H. 1824, Henry John 1826, William Green 1829, Henry Clay 1829, and John B. 1832--all born in Washington County, Ohio--one lost in infancy. In a biography, William Green Otis said there were six siblings, one dying in infancy--by omission, that would have been Henry John Otis (see Sources).
By the 1856 Iowa State Census, Clarke County, Iowa, James Otis is found living with his son John B. Otis and family. John is age 24 and married for one year to Elizage age 19 with infant daughter, James Otis is age 62, and John's older brother William age 28 is also there. James and his son John have been in Iowa for 3 years, but William has a 2-year tenure in Iowa. The three Otis are farmers.
In 1860, James Otis age 67 is living with the Vincent Davis family in Knox Township of Clarke County; the post office was Lacelle. Davis, head of the family, age 48, had a wife and five children at home, value 2370/594 farmer. James Otis has $510 worth of real estate and $875 personal property.
James Otis has not been located on the 1870 census. He died 12 February 1871, age 79 years, 6 months, and 8 days. His memorial stone, now in poor condition, is located in Sanders Cemetery, Doyle Township, in Clarke County (CLARKE COUNTY, IOWA CEMETERIES, Volume II, The Rural Cemeteries, page 171, Sanders Cemetery, plot 10-05: James Otis died Feb 12, 1871 age 79 y 7 m 8 d (Stone weathered & hard to read).
