Educated at Ipswich, Dummer Acadamy and Middlebury College from which he received the the degree of A. M. 1855; also studied at the Theological Seminary, Andover. He spent 3 years on the ocean visiting the Azores, Cape Verde Islands, St. Helena, Cape Town, Madagascar, Pernambuca and the Faulkland Islands. He spent 10 years working for the temperance cause, lecturer and editor of the "Middlesex Washintonian in Lowell, MA from 1841-52. He was a Teacher at Woburn, MA 1853-54; Principal of Williams Acadamy at Stockbridge 1855-63; an officer of the Boston Custon House 1864-76. He was an accomplished writer and eloquent speaker. He resided at Lexington 1876-1882 then moved to Woburn, MA.
