Mary Margaret Baker was born abt. 1789 [per 1850 Census] Her maiden name is unproven, but family tradition says it was Baker. Some researchers have placed her as a probable daughter of Jacob Baker, b. abt. 1760, who was in Rowan County, North Carolina when Mary was born there. He had an apparent daughter at her age per the 1790 and 1800 Census records, and he moved to Beaver Creek, Ashe County, North Carolina in 1801. None of that proves Jacob is Mary's father, but it does fit really well. In 1815 Jacob Fouts (Mary's husband) was listed on the Ashe County tax list in "Capt. Baker's District" and of course Jacob Baker was that Captain, and the only Baker living in the district. [Research above done by researcher Marty Grant]

Her tombstone says her birthyear is 1769, but this is 20 years too early based upon Census records . The tombstone is obviously a new one which likely read the old tombstone as a "1769" instead of an "1789", likely causing the error.

Info: Wife of Jacob Fouts, Sr.
