Jacqueline P. “Jackie” Greene, former long-time resident of The Dalles, Oregon, passed away in Molalla, Oregon, on December 12, 2015. She was 94 years young.
Jackie was born on July 28, 1921, in Lincoln, New Hampshire to Edward and Alberta Champagne. The second of seven children, Jackie learned at an early age the importance of family – a lesson she both carried and taught – throughout her life. Jackie graduated high school from North Woodstock, New Hampshire in June, 1939. Jackie had a lifelong love of learning that she passed on to all of her children.
Jackie absolutely loved to dance. She met the love of her life, John Quimby Greene, at a USO dance in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1944. She and her sister Gerry regularly attended the dances. Jackie spotted the cute sailor from across the room. That evening sparked what would become a 66 year adventure, marrying John on Veteran’s day, 1944.
Jackie was a Navy wife for many years, raising four children and keeping the home fires burning while John fought in the war and later when the family moved to Oregon and John began recruiting. When the youngest child was 12, Jackie decided to return to the workforce at the age of 53. Securing gainful employment was no easy task for a woman who had spent decades working at home and raising kids. It took her over a year, with countless interviews and civil service tests, but she never gave up. She secured a position with the State of Oregon. She subsequently went to work for the State Highway Department first as an administrative assistant. She was promoted to a supervisory position where she worked until her retirement on March 21, 1986.
After retirement, John and Jackie set out on the next phase of their life together travelling around the country with their travel trailer, visiting friends and family. They hit every state in the Union, and some more than once. They shared great times together rediscovering themselves, their country, and the people that mattered most to them.
In 1996, their lives changed when Jackie suffered a stroke. Although their travels slowed, their interminable spirits did not. Jackie worked hard to make the best of her situation. John and Jackie decided to move to an assisted living home in Bend, Oregon, in 2004. After John’s death in 2011, Jackie moved to Molalla where she lived until her death.
In addition to her careers as a wife, mother, and loyal public servant to the people of the State of Oregon, Jackie was active as a scout leader, as an auxillary member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII, and a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Jackie is survived by her four children, John H. Greene (Diana) of Molalla, Oregon; Natalie Bradford (Steve) of Bend, Oregon and Juneau, Alaska; Mark Greene (Karen) of Estacada, Oregon; and Melanie Baillie (Rick) of Hayden, Idaho. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren Bret Bradford, Stephanie Monroe, Luke Greene, Nathan Greene, Andrea Ledwith, Michael Mickelson, Kristen Greene and Jillian Greene; and her six great grandchildren Brooke Heston, Rustyn Bradford, Grace Monroe and Lilli Monroe, Lizbeth Greene and Matthew Greene; as well as her sister Gerry Schweigardt and brothers Edward Champagne and Roger Champagne; sister – in – law Barbara Gentner; brothers-in-law Robert Gentner and George Hardisty; as well as many nieces and nephews, all of whom shared a special place in her heart.
She is preceded in death by her husband John Q. Greene; her sisters Jan Bouche and Joan Naro; brother Howard Champagne; sisters-in-law Lucille Champagne, Natalie Volny, and Margaret Hardisty; brothers-in-law Bob Naro, Dick Bouche, Norbert Volny; and Nephews Gary Gentner and Norbert J. Volny.
A funeral Mass will be held December 21, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church, 301 Frances Street, Molalla, Oregon, with a reception to follow. Interment will be at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in The Dalles, Oregon, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2015. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Jackie’s beautiful life.
